Policies and Procedures Updates Per Diem There has been some confusion over Per Diem, especially when it involves travel that last for only a day. Per Diem is used to cover the cost of your meals while in travel status. The rate is different for each city and is established by the US Government. In order to exercise the per diem option you must be away from your assigned duty station for 12 hours or more on a given day. To recoup the cost of your meals for times that you are away for less than 12 hours, you must submit the original receipt, along with an expense report to FOA Corporate office. Your meal cost should be listed under miscellaneous expense. And the expense form must be signed by your project leader indicating their approval. Another confusion with the per diem concerns the first and last day you are away from your duty station. On the first and last day of your government authorized travel you are paid 75% of the daily per diem rate that has been established by the US Government. If you have any questions about this policy please call Gene Gordon at (425) 828-6577 Timesheets We appreciate all the effort that has gone into making timesheets more accurate, and for getting the timesheets in our office on time. There is one issue that needs to be addressed, holidays. Some of you are recording on your timesheet that you worked on a holiday, when in fact you did not work. We realize that this an oversight. Please make sure that you accurately record if you worked a holiday. And while we are on the subject of holidays.......... There has been some confusion about being paid for holidays after you cash out your leave time when you terminate employment with FOA. The policy is that in order to be paid for a holiday, you must work one (1) 8 hour day, after the holiday. For example, If your last day with FOA was January 31, and you decided that you wanted to use up your remaining vacation time, in order to be paid for the next holiday, President's Day February 18, you would have to work one day after February 18 in order to be eligible to receive holiday pay. Wow! Talk about picking a hot topic! We had more responses to this survey than any of the other surveys we conducted. Even family members of FOA employees voiced their opinion. The weather in Seattle is, excuse me for saying this word, a hot topic. You made your feelings known. You like Seattle, but you would rather be somewhere else in January. We asked where would you rather be? 40% responded that they would rather be on a beach somewhere warm. 25% would rather be sailing somewhere where it is warm, while 21% would rather be skiing. For this question we actually had a lot of write in votes. 14% of the respondents "wrote in" they would rather be in Arizona/Palm Springs playing golf! I apologize to my fellow duffers for forgetting to include that option in the survey. We discovered that most FOA employees are not from Seattle originally. Only 14% of survey respondents answered that they "grew up here" as the reason they moved to the Northwest. 57% said that they moved to the Pacific Northwest for occupational opportunities, while 29% said that they moved here for educational opportunities. We followed up the previous question with "what has kept you in Seattle?" 41% said that friends and families have kept them in the Seattle area, 39% said occupational career opportunities have kept them here, while only 14% said that they have remained in the northwest for the outdoor activities. Finally, we asked what are you most looking forward to this summer, 55% said longer daylight, 27% said less rain, while only 18% said the 2002 Mariner Season. Once again, thanks to all those who participated in this month's survey. Click here to take this month's survey, and check out our new format, as we celebrate President's Day.
